Target Practice

5–7 min station
Teaches

Throwing to a specific spot, not just in a general direction — the habit that turns strong arms into accurate ones.

Bring ● Softball ● Glove ● Fence or wall with a clear target
Setup
  • Stand 15 feet from a fence.
  • Tape or chalk an X on the fence at her chest height.
  • She throws to the X. You rebound it and toss it back.
How it works
  1. She takes a proper step-and-point and throws at the X.
  2. After each throw, call out what she hit — “X!”, “just left”, “a little high”.
  3. Five throws, then adjust: move back 2 feet if she's hitting the X, move forward if not.
  4. Optional scorekeeping: each X is a point, first to 5.
  5. End on a make. Her last memory is always a successful one.
Watch for
  • Her glove-side arm points at the X before she throws — her glove is the aimer.
  • Front foot steps directly at the X.
  • She watches the X, not the ball.
What to say
Pick your spot.
Point at the X.
Aim small, miss small.
Yes — right on the money.
High-five moments
  • Three X's in a row.
  • A miss that's only inches off the target.
  • She starts calling her target out loud before the throw.
Make it easier

Move closer and use a bigger target — a hula-hoop hung on the fence is great. Set her up to hit it a lot.

Level it up

Use a smaller X or put tape targets at different heights and call the target out right before the throw.

Key cue
“Aim small, miss small.”
