Run Through First

5–7 min station
Teaches

Running through first base at full speed — not slowing down or jumping onto the bag — because she can't be tagged out after she crosses.

Bring ● A base or marker ● Open space
Setup
  • Set up a base (or a cone) 20 feet away.
  • She starts in a home-plate batting stance.
  • No ball, no bat — just the run.
How it works
  1. On your “go!”, she sprints toward the base as if she just hit a grounder.
  2. She doesn't slow down as she nears the base — she runs THROUGH it.
  3. Her foot hits the front of the base (the edge closest to her) as she's still running.
  4. She keeps running for 3 more steps past the base, then slows down.
  5. She circles back to the foul side (toward right field) to return — NOT into fair territory.
Watch for
  • She doesn't jump or slide — that's slower than running through.
  • She doesn't slow down at the bag — full speed until 3 steps past.
  • She returns to the bag on the RIGHT side (foul) so she can't be tagged.
What to say
Run through it!
Don't slow down.
Three steps past.
That was a sprint — nice!
High-five moments
  • She doesn't jump or slide once.
  • She naturally veers right after the bag, not left.
  • She runs it out even on dribblers that look like an easy out.
Make it easier

Shorten the distance to 10 feet. Focus only on running through, not on the foul-side return. One thing at a time.

Level it up

Add a mock-throw from you just as she crosses. Did she slow down to watch? Rerun. Sprint all the way through.

Key cue
“Run through it.”
