Rounding the Base

5–7 min station
Teaches

Running past first base in a curve (not a sharp 90-degree turn) so she's pointed at second base and can advance if the ball gets away.

Bring ● 2 bases or markers ● Open space
Setup
  • Set a home-plate marker and a first-base marker 30 feet apart.
  • A second-base marker another 30 feet to the left of first.
  • She starts at home.
How it works
  1. On “go!”, she sprints to first — but about 10 feet before the bag, she curves to the RIGHT slightly (“banana out”).
  2. Her curve brings her back INTO first in a line that points at second base.
  3. Her left foot hits the inside corner of the base as she runs past.
  4. She keeps her body leaned toward second, eyes on the coach or ball.
  5. If you yell “second!”, she keeps running to second. If you say “back!”, she stops and returns.
Watch for
  • She curves BEFORE the bag — not at the bag, which creates a sharp slowing turn.
  • Left foot hits the INSIDE corner of the bag — shortest path to second.
  • She doesn't fully stop — she's always moving, looking, ready to advance.
What to say
Banana out, then in.
Inside corner with the left foot.
Eyes on the coach.
Yes — perfect turn!
High-five moments
  • A curve that clearly slopes out, not a sharp L-turn.
  • Left foot hits the inside corner without a stutter-step.
  • She's facing second base when she touches first.
Make it easier

Use a cone 10 feet before the base as the “start of the curve” marker. A visual cue makes the curve obvious.

Level it up

Practice reading a live ball. A helper throws or drops the ball; she decides to hold at first or keep going to second.

Key cue
“Banana out, banana in.”
