Ready Position

5–7 min station
Teaches

The athletic ready position a fielder lives in — feet shoulder-width, knees bent, weight forward, glove ready — so she can move any direction fast.

Bring ● Glove ● Softball (optional)
Setup
  • Stand on flat grass with plenty of room around her.
  • She starts standing normally.
  • You'll cue her into the ready position and check each piece.
How it works
  1. Feet shoulder-width apart, slightly staggered — one foot a hair in front.
  2. Knees bent like she's about to jump.
  3. Weight on the BALLS of her feet, not her heels — she should feel her heels barely touching.
  4. Glove out in front, open, at about knee height.
  5. Head up, eyes forward. Hold the position for 5 seconds, relax, repeat 5 times.
Watch for
  • Butt down, shoulders over her knees. Not bent at the waist like a tired soccer player.
  • Heels barely touch the ground — weight forward.
  • Glove is low and OPEN, not up at her chest.
What to say
Butt down, glove out.
On your toes.
Ready to move any direction.
Hold it — freeze — yes!
High-five moments
  • She can hold the position for 10 seconds without tipping.
  • She drops into it automatically when you say “ready”.
  • She moves forward, backward, left, or right from the position in one quick step.
Make it easier

Let her put her glove on her knee to stabilise. Build the lower-body position first, then worry about the glove.

Level it up

Call a direction (left, right, back, in) and she explodes that way from the ready position — 5 reps each direction.

Key cue
“Butt down, glove out, ready to move.”
