Quick Catch & Throw

5–7 min station
Teaches

Turning a catch into a throw quickly, with clean footwork and no wasted motion — the skill that turns a good fielder into a good teammate.

Bring ● Softball ● Glove
Setup
  • Helper stands 15 feet away with their own glove.
  • Player starts in athletic ready position, glove out front.
  • A target on the fence or a coach 10 feet past the helper gives her something to throw at.
How it works
  1. Helper tosses the ball to her chest.
  2. She catches with two hands, funnels the ball to her throwing hand.
  3. Small step with her back foot, then step-and-throw back to the helper or the target.
  4. Keep the tempo up — catch, ball-to-hand, step, throw. Smooth, not rushed.
  5. Ten reps, then switch sides (helper moves so she catches-and-throws from a different angle).
Watch for
  • She uses TWO hands on the catch — no one-handed grabs.
  • The ball-to-throwing-hand transfer happens NEAR her chest, not out front.
  • Feet move together — small, balanced, quick.
What to say
Catch, transfer, step, throw.
Two hands.
Smooth, not fast.
That's game speed!
High-five moments
  • Clean transfer without looking down at the ball.
  • Catch-to-throw in under 2 seconds.
  • She ends in a balanced finish, not tipped forward.
Make it easier

Slow the tempo way down. Catch, pause, transfer, pause, throw. Build the sequence before you build the speed.

Level it up

Give her a tag target on the fence, and she has to hit it within 2 seconds of catching. Count the timing out loud.

Key cue
“Catch, transfer, throw.”
