Four-Seam Grip

5–7 min station
Teaches

Gripping the ball across the four seams so it flies straighter and truer than any other grip.

Setup
  • Start without throwing — just practice gripping and re-gripping.
  • You're focused on her fingers, not the throw.
  • Do this for 3–4 minutes before any throwing drill.
How it works
  1. Hold the ball so the seams look like a horseshoe or a smile.
  2. Place her first two fingers ACROSS the top of the horseshoe.
  3. Thumb goes underneath, opposite her fingers, forming a triangle.
  4. Little gap between the ball and her palm — she holds it in her fingertips, not her palm.
  5. Reset the grip 10 times. Then throw short, easy tosses and reset after each catch.
Watch for
  • Fingers across the seams, not along them — “across the smile”.
  • Ball sits on her fingertips, not smushed into her palm.
  • She resets to the same grip every time without you pointing it out.
What to say
Find the smile.
Fingers across, thumb under.
Fingertip grip, not palm.
That's the one. Remember how it feels.
High-five moments
  • She finds the right seams with her eyes closed.
  • She re-grips before every throw without being told.
  • She can explain the grip back to you in her own words.
Make it easier

Draw two small dots with a marker on the top seam where her fingers should go. Visual targets make the grip automatic.

Level it up

Toss her the ball and she has to re-grip it mid-air before throwing it back — forces her to find the seams fast.

Key cue
“Across the smile.”
